Camosun DECA Maintains Its Strong Competitive Record at 2014 ICDC

Six Camosun DECA students attended the 2014 Collegiate DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Washington, DC.  The conference, which took place at the Renaissance Hotel in the US capital April 23-26, hosted more than 1400 post secondary delegates from across North America.

Delegates earned the opportunity to compete in one of  28  individual and team events  offered during the conference.  A sample of the types of events offered include case study competitions in Corporate Finance, Hospitality and Tourism, Business to Business Marketing and Sports and Entertainment Marketing.  Students could also choose to compete in prepared events like Advertising Campaign and Financial Statement Analysis which required the submission of a written prospectus prior to the start of the Conference.  Specifically, Camosun students competed in the following events:

Jeannette Lyle- Accounting (Top 10 Finalist)
Chantal Fillion- Human Resource Management
Matt DeGraff and Duncan Hauser-  Business Ethics (Top 10 Finalist)
Kira Harris and Bob Tiet- Entrepreneurship: Starting Your Own Business

In addition to participating in the competitive events, delegates also attended an industry specific academy which included a variety of guest speakers.

“Participating in the annual ICDC really helps to build student’s confidence about their preparedness to enter the workforce and provides for a significant experience to add to your resume,” said Bob Tiet- Camosun DECA VP of Marketing.  “Equally important is the networking that happens at ICDC.  I’ve met students and potential employers from across North America.”

Camosun Business students raise over $39k for charity

Camosun Business students are making a huge difference in the lives of local and global citizens thanks to recent service learning projects that raised over $39,000 in cash donations for local agencies. While the monetary value alone is impressive, there are intrinsic benefits, too, that amplify the value of the selected projects: increased awareness of important community agencies, validation of the services they provide, support for the clients they serve and, from an educational perspective, life-long practical skills that graduates will invest into their future communities and careers.

Hospitality Integrated Events Management—HMGT 286
IMPACT: $19,700 over 1.5 years

Marketing Project Management—Marketing 420
IMPACT: $13,000 in one term

Golf Management
IMPACT: $6,300 in one term

Congratulations to the students, and thank you to the faculty and support staff who provide vision, encouragement, creativity and tremendous insight in the delivery of life-long learning. Read more…
