Dean, Joan Yates
School of Business' New Dean - Sept 2009
Hi and welcome to the School of Business
I
began as Dean at the beginning of the term and while I’ve
been a member of the college community for several years, I
am getting to see the School in a whole different light!
However, what I’ve always known – and what continues to
impress me – is that at Camosun we have great programs that
are relevant and up to date, reflecting the real needs of
industry, and faculty who really want to be here as
teachers. And of course, we have amazing students – as
learners we see folks at all stages of life who are here to
build careers and futures. Let me know how
you can be helped in that endeavor. Have a great term!
About Joan:
Joan
joined Camosun College in 1991 as Executive Director of the
Foundation & College Relations until 1999 when she left to
pursue a career in the private sector. She stayed connected
to the college by teaching on term contracts then accepted a
continuing instructional appointment with the School of
Business in 2003.
As a faculty member Joan
served as Program Leader for Public Administration, Local
Government and Marketing degree programs as well as
committee service and projects external to the School. Since
2005 Joan’s service has included work with the Program
Review & Renewal team (Educational Research & Development),
member and Chair of the Education Council, Chair of
provincial and national conferences such as ACCC, assisting
senior management with recruitment selection committees and
as a member of the Camosun College Board of Governors. Prior
to moving to Victoria she held the position of Director of
Communications for the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and
her industry experience includes marketing, communications
and public relations management. Joan holds a Masters of
Education from the University of Calgary in Adult and
Workplace Learning as well as a Bachelors of Arts from the
University of Regina.
Yates is particularly
committed to ensuring that the School of Business remains
competitive by offering quality applied programs and by
meeting the needs of the next generation of Victoria
business leaders. "Students today face dramatic change
including shifts in enterprise, the environment, technology
and of course the economy," says Yates. "Our challenge is
making sure that they leave Camosun ready to adapt and to
participate fully in what will inevitably be an exciting
era."
Her volunteer and community
experience include board and committee membership in
national professional associations; chairing a review
process of civic recreational needs; consultation processes
for provincial health care initiatives; feasibility studies
for a children’s museum; strategic planning processes for
social housing and capital campaigning for the Greater
Victoria Hospital Foundation.
History
In 1971 Lorne
Thompson, the first Director (Dean), was instrumental in
establishing diploma programs in Business Studies at Camosun
College. The School of Business assumed responsibility for
Office Careers programs and launched the first year of the
Business Administration Diploma Program in 1971.
Faculty
included Peter McNeil (co-ordinator), Hector Duprey,
Brian Killip, Jack Guthrie and Blane McIntosh. Office Careers faculty
included Joyce Brake, George Lewis and Estelle Inman among
others. These and other faculty members took the initiative
under Lorne's leadership to develop the Camosun flavour and
reputation for quality programs that meet the needs of the
students and the business community.
The school graduated
students in office programs in 1971 and 1972, and in 1973 the
first graduating class of 23 students from Business
Administration programs went on to successful careers as
business owners, partners in accounting firms, as managers of
local businesses, as bankers, and as senior administrators with
various levels of government.
Since 1973 there
have been thousands of graduates in Office, Business and
Hospitality programs. These graduates have pursued careers in
Victoria, British Columbia and abroad. These graduates reflect
the on-going success of the School of Business.
