led by Finance Program Leader and instructor Mahesh Kumar, who
participated in the
2008/2009 BC Portfolio Management Challenge
competition. building a portfolio
that resulted in first-place in the college division, and second-place
overall. Last year, Camosun placed second overall as well.
The BC Portfolio Management Challenge is a
province-wide competition open to British Columbia
universities and colleges with commerce/business
programs. Teams put their finance and accounting
skills to the test while managing one million
dollars in hypothetical capital over five months. To
win, the teams must outperform the S&P 500 index
during the challenge period. The Camosun College
team not only beat the index but actually made a
profit during the same time period that the index
reported a loss.
“Bravo and congratulations to
Camosun College for holding onto their second-place
win yet again against tough competitors, and even
tougher times,” says instructor and team leader,
Mahesh Kumar. “Now that we’ve had an opportunity to
come second-place twice in consecutive years, we’re
poised to take the number one position in 2010!”

The 3rd annual HS Business Simulation
Competition was held last Friday, April 3 at the
Camosun College Interurban Campus. School of
Business invites 65 students from 8 different high
schools, including Belmont, Oak Bay, Victoria High,
Mt Doug, Spectrum, Lambrick Park, Claremont, and
Parklands.
The students competed against each other through
6 rounds (quarters) as a simulated electronics
firm. The simulation called “Marketplace” had the
teams designing marketing programs and products and
attempting to boost or maximize their sales.
We were fortunate to
have nine Camosun Business Student volunteers on
hand to mentor the teams for the first three rounds
of the competition. This gave the high school
students an opportunity to ask questions, get
advice, and build a rapport with our students. In
the afternoon, the mentors stepped back to let the
teams complete the last three rounds on their own.
All team members,
student mentors, and high school teachers enjoyed a
lunch prepared by Camosun College’s culinary arts
students.
Awards
presentation followed a short break after the 6th
quarter as the University of Tennessee support team
tallied the results. The winning team was from
Parkland Secondary, taught by Mr. Roger Pires. In
second place, was the team from Spectrum taught by
Mr. Chuck Groot. The biggest turn around was by the
team from Belmont High, taught by Ms. Sarah Leswal.
The four members of the winning team each
received a $500 tuition credit for Camosun College.
The members of the second place team were awarded
$25 Visa gift cards and the members of the Best
Turnaround team received $25 ITunes cards.

We would like to thank Larry, Cynthia, and
Monique for all their hard work on this year’s
event.
The OA capstone project allows students, while
working in groups, to integrate the knowledge and
skills gained throughout their program by
conceiving, planning, and executing an event.

Coming
together to make a difference in the lives of
children impacted by abuse. An Office Administration
student group have decided to fund raise for a very
worthy cause, Woman's Transition House of
Victoria, as their capstone project during the
final term. Six women have come together to make a
difference in the lives of children impacted by
abuse. Through this
web site, a raffle, and bottle drives, we hope
to raise $2000. To make this summer camp for kids a
reality, Women's Transition House of Victoria needs
$10,000!! Please donate and help us bring a summer
of fun and healing to the children of our city. Help us with this worthy cause
by donating to our giving page and passing this
information along to whomever you like. Thanks you
so much for supporting this great cause!

Camosun
College's Tourism Management students made a
great impression at the recent
Student Case Competition
at the Tourism Industry Conference in
Vancouver. Students were tasked with determining if
a Destination Marketing Organization should be
marketing focused or management focused. Our team
presented a convincing rationale for a management
focus - a progressive position that they were
passionate about!
Congratulations to Darryl Wilson, Breanne
Marsh, Ashley Kalynchuk and Srbo Tambic!
On
February 17 and 18, the Legal Office Assistant
students and faculty traveled to Vancouver for the
5th annual trip to the Vancouver Law Courts. This
trip is sponsored by the School of Business and is
organized by Patricia Gaudreault and Monique Tatum.
This unique opportunity includes spending one day
court watching in Provincial Youth Court, Supreme
Court, and Court of Appeal. The group also met with
Justice Nicole Garson of the B.C. Supreme Court for
a question and answer session in Courtroom 50 which
is the Heritage courtroom.
The day ended with an informal reception which was
attended by Supreme Court registry staff members, a
grad of the LOA program now working in Vancouver,
and a Vancouver lawyer, who chatted to the students
about opportunities available upon graduation.
The second day of the trip involved students court
watching various adult criminal matters in
Provincial Criminal Court at 222 Main Street. After
a morning of court watching, the students attended a
question and answer session with a Judicial Case
Manager.

the 43rd annual Washington State Career Development

Entrepreneurship Event, was the team of
Patrick Antonio, Ben Gerbrecht, and Peter Paine.
The Entrepreneurship Event requires participants to
prepare a written business plan and then orally
present the plan to a panel of judges. Patrick, Ben
and Peter took a modified version of their IBC
project and blew away the competition!
Our outstanding
performance was not limited to the Entrepreneurship
Event. In the Restaurant and Food Service

Caldwell captured the second and third place medals
respectively. Winning second and third place
respectively in the Retail Management event
were Mitchell Woolley and Anisha Lagah. Heather
Lane was runner up in the Human Resource
