Fraser Institute  Student Video Contest - Deadline November 30/09

20 Years Student Programs 1988-2008

Topic:   What is the Appropriate Role of Government in the Economy?

The role of governments in the economy spans a spectrum, from absolute control (communism) to laissez-faire. In between these two extremes, there are a wide range of activities that governments can undertake.

Your video should examine these activities, and determine the appropriate role that government should play. You may choose to consider:

  • What are the fundamental, or necessary, functions of government?
  • What are the effects of different types of activities?
  • What are the costs and benefits of different government actions?
  • Who bears the costs, and who receives the benefits?
  • Can there be “too much of a good thing?” At what point do some activities harm, rather than help the economy?

Videos may examine specific areas of government policy, or consider a broader scope of government actions.

Kylee O’Dell starts third year at Camosun College September 8 with money in the bank. O’Dell, a Bachelor of Business Administration student, was one of three winners of the RBC Student Do-Over Video Challenge this summer.

Ten finalist video submissions were featured on the RBC Better Student Life web site this summer, and at the end of July, three students were each awarded $10,000 after being voted the best by their peers. More than 22,000 students voted online for their favourites.

Student Lounge Project

Starting on May 4 the new Student Lounge Project will begin with actual demo and steel installation happening during the last two weeks of May, completion is expected for the 1st week of August.

The completed area will add value to student spaces and enhance the theme of the “student gathering space” with casual seating areas complete with power for laptops.

Note that interior access to the centre Atrium (both levels) will be cordoned off and restricted to contractors only until the 1st week of August. The existing perimeter hallway that circles the building will be open and accessible during the construction period.
